Our village and its church
Old Somerby parish includes the hamlet of Cold Harbour. There is a population of about 220. There are 16 on the electoral role.
The only amenities the village enjoys are the pub, the Fox and Hounds, and the church.
First mentioned in Domesday Book, the church contains a Norman arch and the effigy of a crusader knight. It is generally in good order, with only a little woodworm, and is small enough to heat efficiently by radiant heaters. There is no water supply. Occasional refreshments are provided in an area within the church or, on special occasions, in neighbouring houses.
The Harvest Supper is now held every year in the pub. It provides one of a few opportunities in the year for the community to come together, have an enjoyable evening and raise funds for the church.
Services are normally held twice a month one of which is usually Holy Communion. Average attendance at normal services is 9. Our pipe organ can be temperamental but is very beautiful when played well. We have no resident organist but there are a number of people we can call upon for special occasions
We currently have 11 members on the PCC. Our AGM is normally in March. We meet prior to our main fund raising event of the year to make our initial plans. We also meet in early Autumn to plan our Harvest Festival and Christmas Services.
THE STATE OF OUR BUILDINGS
We have recently had our quinquennial survey and are waiting on the report. In general we believe the building is in fairly good condition, though we have had some leaks during heavy rainfall, which we have had repaired. We have also recently had to repair our boundary dry stone wall. PCC members normally undertake small repairs wherever possible.
