St Nicholas'

Sapperton

Our village and its church

Located 8 miles east of Grantham, Sapperton is a very small village made up of 20 residents in 12 houses. There are  on the electoral role.

Our residents range from professionals to the active-retired.

St Nicholas’ Church is a focal point for village life, particularly at Easter, Harvest and Christmas. Tucked away in the corner of the village, the small building dates from the 12thC and is a fine example of Norman architecture. The church is enclosed by a low stone wall and contains arches of a vanished 13th century aisle, a plain Norman font and a worn stone carving in the floor of a mediaeval woman in a hood and wimple It is kept unlocked and partakes in the Church Tourism trail. Please note for safety purposes the tower acess is permanently locked.

The village has a strong sense of community and supports each other’s needs and activities. We regularly contribute to Christian Aid and The Grantham Passage..

There are a number of social events and special services held each year usually with a meal and drinks in the church or the very pleasant churchyard.

CHURCH SERVICES

Church Services normally take place on the fourth Sunday of the month and alternate between Holy Communion at 11am and a family service at 10am. Average attendance is 15. Occasional offices are infrequent; there were no baptisms, weddings or funerals in recent years..

THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL

The PCC consists of 12 members and holds a formal AGM in March/April each year and otherwise meets as required to enact its business.

THE STATE OF OUR BUILDINGS

The PCC fully accepts its responsibility to maintain St Nicholas’ in full working order. The basic structure of the building is sound. We use Quinquennial Inspections to prioritise our maintenance activities.. The latest being in 2019  Since 2010 we have installed mains electricity to provide lighting and heating. However there is no mains water or toilet.
